The river Rhine |
From Wikipedia:
The Three Countries Bridge (German: Dreiländerbrücke, French: La passerelle des Trois Pays) is an arch bridge which crosses the Rhine between the commune of Huningue (France) and Weil am Rhein (Germany). It is the world's longest single-span bridge dedicated exclusively to carrying pedestrians and cyclists.
Its name comes from the bridge's location between France, Germany and Switzerland (the latter being located approximately 200 metres away).
The construction of the bridge required 1012 tonnes of steel, 1798 cubic metres of concrete, and 805 metres of cables of 30 and 60 centimetres in diameter.
The bridge was assembled nearby in Huningue, then transported on 26 November 2006 to its current site on the Rhine. The bridge became open to the public on 30 March 2007, and was officially inaugurated on the night of 30 June-1 July 2007.

Very modern and sharp. I like your shot with the two boys on the banks of the river.
How nice to have such a long bridge only for pedestrians.
I am impressed that you canoed along the Rhine!
Beautiful!
Superb...what wonderful scenes of the bridge. Wow.
Ribbit...hope you can join me sometime today! Happy week.
I echo VioletSky with the thought that building a long bridge just for foot traffic is cool. Nice to see the long and the short views. How long was your canoe trip, Carola? At least on this day you had perfect weather for being out on the water.
Cool shot! Coincidentally, I posted a pedestrian bridge, too, that links two CITIES, not COUNTRIES! Ha!
@Pat and Carola... the one Pat posted is almost three times as long as this one! So Wikipedia (and its source) is outdated already... :-) How fun you both post a cool footbridge.
Thanks for your comments.
We traveled by canoe on the river Rhine from the Lake Constance (close to the source) to Duisburg around 750 kilometers. Most of the time the weather was perfect, for weeks only sunshine. The Rhine is beautiful. Especially in the beginning, where it is smaller, we found so lovely places to pitch our tent and to swim or to float (without canoe, walking back on the shore)in the river. Great trip with kids and the last leg of our two years travel.
Not only are these wonderful photos, I really appreciated the explanation you provided, too. Very interesting!
