View from the Karakorum Highway.
Closer to this awesome mountain: in the Tarashing Valley, Astore District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. March 2009.
That's where the trekking of the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat starts.
For our family it was an big adventure to come here.

My son Thomas with nomadic gold-hunters. Several families live along the Indus River in tents. We met those people while walking a street and waiting for a possibility to hitchhike to Astor.
The surrounding mountains are stunning (from this point the Nanga Parbat is visible). The Indus runs through this rough stone "desert". But get in touch with these people was a highlight.
To travel with small children was easy for us. One thing is important: Time. Time to adapt.

While driving across Africa from south to north, we saw this sign before. But there were only big patches of feces on the street. No elephants. For example on the Caprivi Strip in the north of Namibia.
In Tanzania we saw wild elephants for our first time. Fantastic! GREAT
This was while driving on a normal street, which goes through Mikumi National Park, in April 2010.
We deceided then to spend an extra day there and watch some more wild animals.
This is my ABC Wednesday. To watch more go to this site from Mrs. Nesbitt.

In Ürümqi, the most remote city from any sea in the world. It is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline. It's the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. China May 2009.

All this people are from our bus and we had to wait for the first border control. Not easy at the heights of 4693 metres (15397 ft). We felt dissy.
Before I posted some information about this border at the Khunjerab Pass. See here.
The road to Kashgar.
Typical houses in the far west of the autonomous region Xinjiang.
The Karakoram Highway is for me one of the most interesting roads of the world. Really worth the effort.
