Ueruemqi to Beijing

Our son Thomas is having fun

in the open sleeper

Our train, Ürümqi to Beijing, China, May 2009

Ürümqi is the capital from Xinjiang. About 3,700 kilometers by rail to Beijing. Around 48 hours on the train. We had a great time getting close to the Chinese people.

Linked to ABC Wednesday. C is for China. And for Couchsurfing in China. We had a great time in Ürümqi staying in the flat from a young man, spending two fantastic days together, exploring the city and eating the best local food. And he helped us to buy a ticket for this train, so it was easy.
Next time the letter C will be Couchsurfing. Such a great way to travel. Today it is to late.
Ürümqi is Ueruemqi is Urumqi is Wulumuqi.

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far west of China. We came from Pakistan by bus over the Khunjerab Pass to this region. It is so different from other parts in China.

Linked to ABC Wednesday todays letter is X. And linked to signs, signs. Signs with Uyghur and Chinese letters. So 190 km to where?

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far west of China. This region is so different from other parts in China and has borders to eight countries.
Kashgar is an oasis city on the Silk Road with an unique charcter. They have close connections (religion, trade, appearance) to the people in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

What's going on?

Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China, May 2010
What? Where? Who? Why? When? And oh wonder, all these words in German start with a W too. Was, wo, wer, warum, wann.
My ABC Wednesday are all the W question words.

Who is everywhere on Tiananmen Square?
This film team got some trouble while filming there. I nearly got some trouble while taking a picture of these scene.

China #6

At the famos landscape Hongshan Park.

In Ürümqi, the most remote city from any sea in the world. It is about 1,400 miles (2,500 km) from the nearest coastline. It's the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. China May 2009.

China #2

On the border between Pakistan and China, May 2009.

All this people are from our bus and we had to wait for the first border control. Not easy at the heights of 4693 metres (15397 ft). We felt dissy.
Before I posted some information about this border at the Khunjerab Pass. See here.

The road to Kashgar.

Typical houses in the far west of the autonomous region Xinjiang.

The Karakoram Highway is for me one of the most interesting roads of the world. Really worth the effort.

A sandstorm in Tashkurgan. That's the town with the immigration office and the big border control.
A long road to Kashgar.

Pagoda

Chinese pagoda, Ürümqi, China, May 2009

Ürumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China's most western province. The most "inland" city in the world - the furthest from any major body of water - Urumqi is 3,270 km (2,050 miles) from Beijing. It lies on the northern route of the Silk Road. It's a modern city with a lot of skyscrapers.

From Pakistan we came by bus via Kashgar to Ürümqi. In Ürümqi we stayed in the flat with a young man whom we met through couchsurfing.org. He showed us around in town and we had an interesting time.

By train we reached Beijing in two days.

So far away

Khunjerab-Pass, elevation 4693 metres (15397 ft), border Pakistan - China, May 2009

We crossed the Khunjerab-Pass by bus on our way from Islamabad to Bejing. It took us around two days from Gilgit in Pakistan to Kashgar in China. The Karakorum Highway is a road permanent under construction and only passable between May and November. We got stuck at a landslide for some hours. This mountains are really far way.

From Wikipedia: Khunjerab Pass is a high mountain pass in the Karakorum Mountains on the northern border of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Xinjiang Autonmous Region of China. The highest paved border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway.
