ABC Wednesday - D

The Danube River in Passau, Germany

Alleys of the old town, "Zur blauen Donau" is a name of a restaurant and means "at the blue Danube"

The town is dominated by the Veste Oberhaus a former fortress of the Bishop, on the mountain crest between the Danube and the Ilz rivers

This is my ABC Wednesday for the letter D. It's the Danube River. Passau is the city of three rivers.

More from my posts from the Danube.

City of Three Rivers

The River Inn meets the River Danube, the historical center Altstadt from Passau, Germany, 2008
Passau (previously Latin: Batavis or Batavia) is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany. It is also known as the Dreiflüssestadt or "City of Three Rivers," because the Danube is joined at Passau by the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north.
In an impressiv areal view you may watch the different colors from the rivers.
Passau was an ancient Roman colony and is worth a visit.

Shipping signs at the Danube

Every hundred meters, in Austria near Tulln, August 2008

Kilometric sign in Oltenita, Romania, Oktober 2008

The hecto metric signs are the red numbers on the white ground along the Danube. That's a  lot of work to paint the stones. Kilometric signs are white on black boards.

Loo with a view

In the morning, Dubova, Romania, October 2008
While cycling the Danube bike way we found a nice place for our tent. It was close to a new (and big) house under construction. And this loo was for the workers. A quite place at night, because nobady was there.
And so beautiful at the Danube.

Dreiländerbrücke – La passerelle des Trois Pays – Three Countries Bridge

July 2010

The river Rhine
We came here while traveling by canoe on the Rhine.
From Wikipedia:
The Three Countries Bridge (German: Dreiländerbrücke, French: La passerelle des Trois Pays) is an arch bridge which crosses the Rhine between the commune of Huningue (France) and Weil am Rhein (Germany). It is the world's longest single-span bridge dedicated exclusively to carrying pedestrians and cyclists.

Its name comes from the bridge's location between France, Germany and Switzerland (the latter being located approximately 200 metres away).
The construction of the bridge required 1012 tonnes of steel, 1798 cubic metres of concrete, and 805 metres of cables of 30 and 60 centimetres in diameter.
The bridge was assembled nearby in Huningue, then transported on 26 November 2006 to its current site on the Rhine. The bridge became open to the public on 30 March 2007, and was officially inaugurated on the night of 30 June-1 July 2007.

Chain Bridge in Budapest

Hungary, September 2008

Széchenyi Lánchíd is the Hungarian name for the Chain Bridge. In 1849 it was the first bridge in Budapest crossing the Danube River.

We started our last big journey with walking along the Donauradweg (Danube Bike Trail) from Passau (Germany) to Budapest. In Budapest we bought bikes and followed the Danube to the Black Sea. Quite a different Europaen experience. A fantastic slow travel. A wonderful river.

Francisca with her Vienna Bridges over Danube gave me the idea for this post.
