One more border

near Ipiales |
shots from the bus drive, Colombia 2009 |
Ipiales is a city in Nariño Department, Colombia, near the border with Ecuador. With an elevation of about 2950 m (9678 ft). Ipiales is located on the high plateau called "Tuquerres e Ipiales." Text from Wikipedia
After one night couchsurfing in Ipiales, we walked across the border to Ecuador. (After waiting in line with a lot of local people.) Then we continued per bus to Quito.

Tres Fronteras
Going in a small boat from Peru to Brazil, February 2010 |
From Wikipedia:
Tres Fronteras (Portuguese: Três Fronteiras) is the Spanish name for an area of the Amazon Rainforest, noted for its natural beauty, where Brazil, Peru, and Colombia meet. Cities near here are Tabatinga, Leticia, and Santa Rosa de Yavari, this latter on an island in front of Leticia.
A very interesting stop on our trip down the Amazon in this three cities and three countries all so close together. But try to imagine how hot and humid it is.
By ship we came in two days from Iquitos (Peru), spend one night in the very quite Santa Rosa (no cars), spend three more nights in Tabatinga. To Leticia we drove by mini bus to change money.
Our trip on the Amazon continued from Tabatinga to Manaus (Brazil). Again two days on a local ship. All easy to organize while we were there.
I posted some photos from this leg before.

Orange

In Cartagena de Indias , Colombia, December 2009 |
O is for orange. This is my ABC Wednesday.
I was looking through my photos and was surprised how much orange I found in Cartagena, in this old town on the Caribian Coast. Some say it's the most beautiful town in South America. The old town is full of beauty, atmosphere, architecture and color. Fantastic to walk around, listen to some music, shoot some photos and watch the locals (yes it's a living museum).
Cartagena is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There was snow - white snow
Yesterday, Lünen the city where I live, Germany
It's unusual to have so much snow here, it is snowing every day, and now for nearly two weeks.
I like the sound - kn, kn, kn, when walking in the fresh snow.
It's pure chance that I write this now.
Colombia has nothing to do with snow.
Exactly one year ago on our big journey we've been in Colombia.
Street vendor, Bogota, Colombia, 9th December 2009
Our traveling was interesting, with no problems. We drove from Cartagena, on the Atlantic, all the way south to Ecuador. By bus. We slept mostly in houses from friendly people, whom we met via www.couchsurfing.org. Just great!
The titel is a quote from the song Violet Hill by Coldplay.
